Margaret Lockwood on her recent solo show at the Fairfield Art Center.
"Painted Spaces" was a unique gift to me both professionally and personally. In each room viewers were surrounded by the clouds, trees and water while, at the same time, feeling enveloped within each individual work.
As I was in the midst of painting the "Trees" series last fall, my mother, Helen, suddenly passed away. She was my biggest fan and her last words to me were, "Your paintings make me weep." Here spirit painted me through the rest of the series. I lovingly dedicate the "Trees" series to her.
My dear brother-in-law, Roger, lost his courageous battle with brain cancer. He was a middle-aged Deadhead and brilliant scientist and at his memorial we sang the Grateful Dead song, "Ripple" - "Ripple in still water when there is no pebble tossed nor wind to blow..." So, of course, the water room is for Roger.
The cloud paintings are dedicated to my father, Fred, whom I have always looked up to for his combination of strong intelligence and gentle inclusiveness. Just before he died this spring I told him, "The clouds are for you, Dad."
The "Painted Spaces" paintings celebrated the lives of Helen, Fred, and Roger. I was grateful for this chance to express my love for them by filling these rooms with my painted spaces.
