Wabi-Sabi and Woodwalk

During the late fall a friend gave us a book including reference to the classical Japanese aesthetic concept of wabi-sabi.  It has many aspects but includes a reverence for what has been well used and served the task for which it was made well (think Velveteen Rabbit), however imperfect or  worn or subject to the natural processes of decay.  It is not inherently nostalgic or naieve but is definitely not high tech or overtly consumerist.

When Margaret read about it, she said “Hmmmm, I’ve been embracing wabi-abi all my profesional life without having a label for it.”  See what you think when you next visit.

Artist Lockwood’s paintings “surround” you at Door County’s new Cookery Restaurant

After a year of rebuilding, the “new” Cookery is open in downtown Fish Creek and receiving rave reviews for its eclectic menu including old favorites, its gorgeous new building, its spectacular view and its collection of art work.

Downstairs in the main restaurant, Woodwalk Gallery and Fish Creek artist Liz Maltman’s pastel landscapes provide just the right mix of sophistication and whimsy, bold colors and favorite Door County scenes.

In the upstairs wine bar and late night eatery, guests are surrounded by the large-scale ethereal landscapes of Margaret Lockwood whose artistic palate perfectly compliments the earthy colors of the walls and the gorgeous reclaimed wood floors and bar.  Within the beautifully handcrafted railings and ironwork are medalions of molded glass created by Jeremy Popelka and Stephanie Trenchard at Popelka/ Trenchard Glass in Sturgeon Bay.

Woodwalk Gallery offers the “best” of Door County

According to surveys conducted this past fall and winter by the Door County Visitors Bureau, some of the “best” reasons people give for coming to Door County include 1- to relax, 2- to enjoy nature, 3- to share the Door County way of life.  At Woodwalk our mission is to provide “the essence of Door County in an historic setting” through Margaret’s art work and the expreience of being at Woodwalk itself.

There are many different ways to relax: listening to great music, walking the labyrinth, enjoying the diversity of art work, just having a cup of tea or coffee and sitting alone or with friends in the SiloSpace.  To enjoy nature: you can take a handmade paper class, watch the bird flyway, hike the sculpture field.  And, to share in the Door County way of life: you can visit our historic 1890’s barn and gallery and take home a piece of Door County seen through the eyes of one of our 45 artists.

Commissioning the Door County landscape of your dreams….

It’s a beautiful, snowy Door County day and Margaret Lockwood is busy painting pieces people have comissioned… people who said “I love that painting but I want it… this size, or that color, or more like this….” Watch this site for an ongoing look at how she paints called “Margaret’s Wall”. AND, if you visited Woodwalk Gallery this past year and loved a painting… one that would be perfect… almost- do what Andrew and Katie did and say “Could you do something like this only….?” in their case, smaller.

At Woodwalk, the commissioning process is unique; you tell Margaret what you would like, she paints a painting she loves, then you decide, before you pay for it, if you like it or not.  If you do, then, and only then, it is yours.
