Wabi-Sabi and Woodwalk

During the late fall a friend gave us a book including reference to the classical Japanese aesthetic concept of wabi-sabi.  It has many aspects but includes a reverence for what has been well used and served the task for which it was made well (think Velveteen Rabbit), however imperfect or  worn or subject to the natural processes of decay.  It is not inherently nostalgic or naieve but is definitely not high tech or overtly consumerist.

When Margaret read about it, she said “Hmmmm, I’ve been embracing wabi-abi all my profesional life without having a label for it.”  See what you think when you next visit.

Artist Lockwood’s paintings “surround” you at Door County’s new Cookery Restaurant

Lockwood's Trees on the shore

Lockwood's Trees on the shore

After a year of rebuilding, the “new” Cookery is open in downtown Fish Creek and receiving rave reviews for its eclectic menu including old favorites, its gorgeous new building, its spectacular view and its collection of art work.

Downstairs in the main restaurant, Woodwalk Gallery and Fish Creek artist Liz Maltman’s pastel landscapes provide just the right mix of sophistication and whimsy, bold colors and favorite Door County scenes.

In the upstairs wine bar and late night eatery, guests are surrounded by the large-scale ethereal landscapes of Margaret Lockwood whose artistic palate perfectly compliments the earthy colors of the walls and the gorgeous reclaimed wood floors and bar.  Within the beautifully handcrafted railings and ironwork are medalions of molded glass created by Jeremy Popelka and Stephanie Trenchard at Popelka/ Trenchard Glass in Sturgeon Bay.
